This New Years, resolve to get back your youthful glow, and retain it! It’s no secret we all want to look younger—heck, some women will do just about anything to turn back the clock. But before you go thinking about plastic surgery or crazy expensive creams, look no further than your local department store and drugstore.
With millions of skincare products on the market today, it’s hard to know what actually works. Luckily, The Good Housekeeping Research Institute tested 90 products on 820 volunteers, conducted more than 3,000 lab tests, and tallied 1,800+ questionnaires all to find the best anti-aging beauty products on the market today!
While the best contender for facial moisturizer does cost a pretty penny, drugstore brands proved to be just as effective in all of the other products! Eighteen months of research later, these are the anti-aging potions that proved to really make a difference:
Best Facial Moisturizer with SPF 15:
Admittedly pricey (at $150 in department stores) Chanel Ultra Correction Lift Lifting Firming Day Cream SPF 15 was rated highest overall. Consumers said benefits included a firmer, smoother, radiant, more even-toned complexion, and found it to be the most moisturizing.
While all other creams showed very little reduction of age spots or wrinkles, Chanel’s Day Cream did result in a slight improvement in beneath-the-surface UV spots (which turn into splotchy skin over time).
It’s a tie: L’Oréal Paris Advanced RevitaLift Deep-Set Wrinkle Repair Night Crème ($18 at Target) and Vichy LiftActiv Retinol HA Night ($42 at CVS) shared the top spot! Both treatments received impressive moisturizing scores and high praise from consumers for their textures, light scents, and for not causing skin irritation.
We weren’t surprised to see budget-friendly L’Oréal at the top of the list! This drugstore brand has been receiving some serious praise lately for its effectiveness. L’Oréal Paris Advanced RevitaLift Deep-Set Wrinkle Repair Night Crème received the best overall consumer performance score, including the highest ranking from panelists for firming and reducing wrinkles. In lab results, L’Oréal also tested best for minimizing forehead lines and wrinkles.
Vichy was best at evening out skin tone and addressing fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and nose.
Best Eye Cream:
Olay Pro-X Eye Restoration Complex ($34 at Walmart) was ranked highest in the lab for improving signs of aging around the eyes, including dryness, crow’s-feet, fine lines, puffiness, dark circles, and sagging lids. Consumers noted that the cream reduced crow’s-feet and puffiness considerably well.
Best Anti-Aging Serum:
Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum ($23 at Target) was a superior performer overall and shared the highest consumer score with the second-place finisher, Mary Kay. Consumers gave this vitamin A- and E-enriched formula high marks for its tone-evening and skin-firming properties. Boots also received a perfect firming score!
