It’s sounds way too crazy, but it’s true! 30-weeks pregnant, Nicole Leszczynski was arrested, along with her husband Marcin for shoplifting two sandwiches that together cost $5! Their 2-year-old daughter Zofia, who was with them at the time, was taken into custody by the state.
The former Air Force staff sergeant had recently moved to downtown Honolulu with her husband and little girl. The family had ventured out to a Safeway supermarket to do some grocery shopping, and the famished mom grabbed two sandwiches to curb her hunger while they shopped.
She saved the wrappers to be scanned at the register, but forgot to pay for them at checkout.
When the couple was stopped by security they quickly offered to pay for the forgotten sandwiches, but store managers refused their money and insisted on calling the police.
Leszczynski told The AP, “I asked to talk to a manager and he said it was against their policy to pay for items that left the store…The security guard said we were being charged with shoplifting.”
A police officer arrived 4 hours later, arrested the couple and charged them with fourth-degree theft, a petty misdemeanor. Child Welfare Services were called to take their 2-year-old daughter into custody.
In response to the incident, Honolulu police told reporters that it is routine procedure to call Child Welfare Services if a child is present when both parents are arrested.
The couple was released on a $50 bail a few hours later the incident, but Zofia still had to spend the night away from her parents.
“It was the most ridiculous chain of events that happened,” Leszczynski said. “It’s still hard to believe what happened. I didn’t want Zofia to be scared because she’s never spent a night away from us. She didn’t have her stuffed animal. She didn’t have her toothbrush.”
Safeway has since dropped all charges against the parents, but the incident has sparked a heated debate on Facebook and Twitter about whether or not it’s ok to munch while you shop.
Still, we think the bigger question here is why weren’t the parents allowed to take their little girl home?!
What do you think about all of this? Do you like to snack while you shop?
